Gerber Tools: Knives, Multi-Tool, Shovels, and Survival!
71The Gerber Background
Gerber has some of the most reliable tools on the market today. Whether it be knives, multi-tools, or even survival tools Gerber has done it all. Using only the best materials they make tools that have unmatched quality. They are an Oregon based company that has been in business for over 70 years. Some of their models are even used by the United States Army. This includes some of their folding shovels, knives, and hatchets. Their knives specifically are a very popular product and are known as one of the best American knife brands for their toughness and reliability.
Survival Tools:
Gerber has become a very popular brand in many different kinds of tools. Specifically their survival tools are very successful. As stated before some of their shovels and hatchets are used by United States Troops because of their reliability. Some of the survival tools that I will not be discussing include machetes, skinning knives, and saws. The machetes work very nicely for hiking/path clearing because some of them are fairly compact.
Gerber Gorge Folding Shovel
Shovels:
They have many different models of shovels and they have some of the best materials in them. Lets take the Gorge Folding Shovel. This is a good multi purpose shovel for many different reasons. Being a folding shovel it is very compact so taking it hiking or camping is a very reasonable choice. It is also very lightweight for a shovel weighting only 28 oz. The open length is 16.5 inches and closed length 9.25 inches. This is also a fairly cheap shovel, being just over $20.
Another model of shovel that Gerber has to offer is the E-tool. This is the more heavy duty shovel that you would use for more aggressive tasks. The E-Tool is a folding shovel but it is not as compact and weighs just over 37 oz. Not too heavy, but not extremely light either. It's open length is 23.75 inches and closed length 9.25 inches. A key feature of this shovel is that it has a serrated edge making it a really nice utility tool. There are two models available, one with a pick and without. At a cost of $58 for the normal and $89 for the one with the pick it is considerably more than the Gorge shovel.
Hatchets/Axes:
I really like the axes that Gerber has to offer. Having over 8 different axes they have a pretty wide selection. Each with a pretty defined purpose. I am only going to talk about two different types however.
Gerber Back Paxe
The first one is the Back Paxe, which is more of a hatchet. This is a really nice hatchet, being really sturdy. The key features of the Back Paxe are:
- 17 oz.
- Forged steel head.
- Glass filled nylon handle
- Total length 9 inches.
- Blade length 2.7 inches.
This makes a small and lightweight hatchet that can make for a very good carry for a camper/hiker. This is a very reliable hatched with the blade being made of steel, and a good quality handle. The price isn't bad for being a really nice carry sitting at only $41.
The other hatchet I am going to be talking about it the Camp Axe. Now this is more of an axe than the other one, but does not have as much carry-ability than the other one. Some of the technical features of this one are:
- 34.6 oz.
- Forged steel head.
- Glass filled nylon handle.
- Total length 17.3 inches.
- Blade length 2.9 inches.
As you can tell it has many similarities compared to the Back Paxe, but gains a lot of weight and length. This would make for a more work axe, like for chopping wood and other similar tasks. However this would not make for a very good camping/hiking axe for its length. The price isn't too much more compared to the Back Paxe and is only 10 bucks more at $51.
Really intersting review of the Gerber Back Paxe!
Multi-Tool
The next section is going to be about the Gerber multi-tools. The multi-tools are basically Leathermans. They have some of the same general attachments as Swiss Army Knives, but they all include a pair of pliers. Like the survival tools I am going to discuss two different models of multi-tools.
Gerber Compact Sport
The first model is the Compact Sport. The cool thing out this model is that it is one hand open. Meaning that you can flick your wrist and open it. Some of the key features of this model are:
- Made of stainless steel.
- 6.7 oz.
- Overall length 5.6 inches.
- Closed length 4.37 inches.
- Over 10 different tools including screw drivers, knives, needle circle, scissors, and more.
The Compact Sports makes for a very nice little multi-tool and has a wide range of uses. This is a really light multi-tool and can even make for a very good carry for a camper/hiker for its weight, or a utility for a construction worker. Like the other Gerber products also has a fairly moderate price at $50.
The next model is the Diesel which is also a one hand open. This model is very similar to the Compact sport, but is made mainly for heavy duty purposes. Making this multi-tool very tough and rugged. The main features of this one are:
- Overall length 6.6 inches.
- Closed length 4.9 inches.
- 8.2 oz.
- Has very similar tools to the other one, but they are more durable.
Being
more durable and for the more rugged job they are considerably more.
You can get a Gerber Diesel for $85. This still is not a bad price for
such a good tool, and if you are someone who needs nice durable tools
then you should look into one of these. I personally own a Gerber
multi-tool and can say that they are really nice tools to have.
Knives
The final section of this is going to be about some of Gerber's legendary knives. This is going to be my favorite section because I am a big fan of Gerber pocket knives. They make some of the best quality knives in the industry, and are really reliable. They have over 15 different kinds of knives.
Gerber Contrast (Serrated)
The first knife I am going to be showing is the Contrast. This is knife has some great quality to it. Some of it's features are:
- Made of stainless steel.
- Blade length 3 inches.
- Open Length 7.1 inches.
- Closed Length 4.3 inches.
- Weight 3.7 oz.
This is a very good carry knife for many reasons. The first being that it is, like most knives, lightweight. The blade length is also not too long or short either. For such a good quality knife it's price is pretty good only costing $36 and comes in both smooth and serrated.
The final model for today is going to be the Swagger. This is like most Gerber knives another good quality knife. It shares many features of the Contrast. Some of the features are:
- Blade length 3.3 inches.
- Open length 7.5 inches.
- Closed length 4.3 inches.
- Weight 4.4 oz.
This is a more heavy duty knife than the other one. This is because it weighs more mainly, but the longer blade also contributes. The design however is not as slick so it costs a lilttle less but only 5 bucks at $31.
